Are There Prophets Today? Shouldn’t Someone Be Guiding Us Through the End-Times?

The Bible, especially in the King James Version (KJV), tells us much about prophets—men and women whom God called to speak His truth, warn nations, and reveal His will. But a question many believers ask today is: Are there prophets now? Does God still raise up prophets in modern times?

Biblical Foundation for Prophecy

In the Old Testament, prophets like Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel were God’s mouthpieces, delivering warnings, promises, and divine revelations. The New Testament continues this tradition with figures like John the Baptist and the apostle John, who received visions recorded in Revelation.

The Bible tells us that prophecy is a gift given by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:10). It also foretells a time when God would pour out His Spirit on all people:

“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy…”

The Apostle Peter quoted this prophecy at Pentecost in Acts 2, signaling the start of the New Testament Church era. This suggests prophecy is not just a relic of the past but an ongoing part of God’s work.

What About Prophets Today?

The idea of modern prophets is debated among Christians. Some believe prophecy ceased after the biblical canon was completed, while others firmly believe God still raises up prophetic voices to guide, warn, and encourage His people.

Reasons to Believe in Modern Prophets:

• The spiritual gifts, including prophecy, are listed as ongoing gifts to the Church (1 Corinthians 12; Ephesians 4).
• Throughout history and even today, many testify to receiving clear, God-given messages that align with Scripture.
• The Bible warns us to be watchful in the last days (1 Timothy 4:1), which may include prophetic warnings.

Words of Caution:

• The Bible commands believers to test all prophecy:

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God…” (1 John 4:1, KJV)

• False prophets have always existed and will increase before Christ returns (Matthew 24:24).

How Should Believers Approach Prophecy Today?

1. Discernment Is Key
   Always measure prophetic words against the Bible. True prophecy will never contradict Scripture.
2. Focus on Christ
   Genuine prophecy glorifies Jesus Christ and points people to salvation.

   Seek God’s guidance in understanding prophetic messages.

How to Discern a Prophet Today: A Biblical Guide

In today’s world, many claim to hear from God and speak prophetically. But the Bible warns us to be cautious, to test the spirits, and to discern carefully who truly speaks God’s words. How can we tell if someone is a genuine prophet or a false one? The King James Version (KJV) Bible gives us clear instructions.

1. Test Their Message Against Scripture

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God…”
— 1 John 4:1 (KJV)

The first and most important test is whether the prophet’s message aligns with the Bible. God’s Word is unchanging truth. A true prophet will never contradict Scripture. If their words clash with the Bible’s teachings, be wary.

2. Look for the Fruit of Their Life

“Ye shall know them by their fruits.”

A genuine prophet’s character will reflect godly fruit: humility, holiness, love, and integrity. If a person’s life is marked by greed, immorality, pride, or manipulation, this is a serious red flag.

3. Watch for Fulfilled Prophecy

True prophecy always points to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. It calls people to repentance, faith, and holiness. If a prophet’s message glorifies themselves, a movement, or leads people away from Christ, beware.

5. Consider Their Response to Correction

A genuine prophet will humbly accept correction and submit to God’s authority. They won’t react defensively or seek to control others through their words.

6. Seek the Guidance of the Holy Spirit

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth…”

Pray for discernment. God’s Spirit helps believers recognize truth and avoid deception. Never rely on human wisdom alone.

Should a Prophet Speak About the End Times? What If They Are Silent?

The Bible teaches clearly that in the last days, there will be great signs, upheaval, and the revealing of God’s plans before Christ returns. Because of this, many believers expect that true prophets will warn, prepare, and encourage the Church concerning the end times.

Biblical Expectation for Prophets in the Last Days

• Warning and Preparation Are Central
  Prophets in Scripture often called people to repentance and readiness, especially when judgment or great change was coming (e.g., Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel). The New Testament also urges believers to be watchful and prepared (Matthew 24:42–44, Luke 21:36).
• End Times Prophecy Is a Key Theme
  Revelation, Daniel, and the Olivet Discourse (Matthew 24) describe events that believers should understand to recognize the times. A prophet who truly hears from God would not ignore these crucial warnings.

What If a Prophet Is Silent About the End Times?

• Silence May Be a Sign to Question
  Given the Bible’s emphasis on being watchful and prepared, a prophet who never speaks about the signs of the times or the need for spiritual readiness might be neglecting an important part of their calling.
• Not All Prophetic Words Must Be About the End
  However, prophecy can also be about encouragement, correction, guidance, and revelation of God’s will in many areas of life. Silence on the end times is a questionable matter of their prophetic title, and should be considered as you evaluate their sincere prophet status.
• Jesus’ Own Warning
  Jesus said:

“Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.” (Mark 13:33, KJV)
And in Matthew 24:14:
“This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.”

Prophets have a role in helping the Church understand and proclaim these truths.

A genuine prophet today is expected to help prepare God’s people for what lies ahead, including the end times. While not every prophetic word must be about future judgment, silence on such an urgent, biblical theme should make believers cautious and seek God’s guidance carefully.
